Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals are trained to provide critical, noninvasive interventions that save lives and reduce harm at emergency sites.

Beyond immediate response, they are skilled in safely transporting patients and often deliver the majority of out-of-hospital care in communities worldwide.

When every second counts, EMS is there.

The School of Health Sciences offers a Job-Direct Low Unit Certificate in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) designed to prepare students for entry-level careers in emergency medical care. To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete EMS 110 Emergency Medical Responder followed by EMS 112 Emergency Medical Technician (Basic).

The EMS program provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to respond effectively in a wide range of emergency situations. Core principles covered include leadership, communication, safety, situational awareness, scene size-up, decision making, patient assessment, and professionalism.

Learning takes place through a combination of classroom instruction, skills labs, simulations, role-playing, tactical decision-making exercises, and 24 hours of supervised field experience.

Students who successfully complete all 170 hours of training with a minimum grade of 80% (B) or higher are eligible to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam, a requirement for certification in the state of California.

Upon certification, graduates are qualified for employment opportunities with ambulance services, fire or rescue agencies, search and rescue teams, ski patrols, and other pre-hospital emergency care providers.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate of Achievement
Prepares students with the knowledge and skills required for entry-level EMT certification.

  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Job-Direct Low Unit Certificate
A streamlined pathway for immediate workforce entry with required EMS courses.
