Biology

Solano Community College Biology courses provide students with hands-on laboratory and field experience designed to build essential skills for future study and careers in the life sciences. In this program, you will learn how to:

  • Study and manipulate macromolecules

  • Aseptically transfer cells and maintain cultures

  • Work with common model organisms used in modern biological research

  • Conduct a field study to apply classroom knowledge in real-world environments

This combination of lab and field work ensures that students gain both the technical expertise and practical experience needed for advanced study in biology, biotechnology, health sciences, and related fields.

From molecules to ecosystems, our Biology program gives you the skills to explore life at every level.

This degree gives Biology majors the Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics knowledge that allows them to succeed in upper division courses after transfer. In the major, students gain knowledge of biological molecules, cell structure and function, bioenergetics, Mendelian and molecular genetics, microbiology, plant biology, evolution, ecology, biodiversity, and biotechnology. In the laboratory students learn experimental design including data collection and analysis, keeping a legal laboratory notebook, and reporting the results in a standard scientific journal format. The Biology courses give students an extensive laboratory experience where they gain essential skills required to study and manipulate macromolecules, aseptically transfer cells, work with the common model organisms used in Biology research, and carry out a field study

  • Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer (AS‑T)
Designed as a pathway for students transferring into the CSU system, this degree requires 35 units in the major, combined with IGETC or CSU‑GE breadth requirements for a total of 60 transferable semester units. Students must earn a 2.0 GPA and receive a grade of C or better in all major coursework (note: “P” grades are not accepted for major courses). Completing this degree guarantees admission to the CSU system as a junior.

  • Certificate of Achievement in Biology
Available upon completion of the 18–19 unit Biology major courses with a minimum grade of C (or P if taken Pass/No Pass).

  • Associate in Science in Biology (Non‑Transfer Option)
Earned by completing the 40‑unit Biology major, plus general education requirements and electives to reach a minimum of 60 total units. All major courses must be completed with a C or better (or P).

A foundation in Biology opens doors to a wide range of careers and advanced studies. Students may pursue roles such as:

  • Biological Technician

  • Environmental Scientist

  • Microbiologist

  • Laboratory Assistant

  • Biotechnology Associate

  • Wildlife or Conservation Specialist

  • Healthcare and Pre-Med Pathways (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing)

  • Graduate Study in Biology or related sciences

With a Biology background from Solano, you’ll be prepared for both entry-level opportunities and transfer into bachelor’s and advanced degree programs in the life sciences.
