INTRODUCTION

Shawn Bee and the Associated Students of Solano Community College (ASSC) had a vision. Their vision was to enrich their daily lives on campus by creating a “road map” for campus enrichment. Relentless pursuit of that vision, including the commissioning of LPA to assist in producing the “road map,” has culminated in a first step in the process—the preparation of this plan. In the Spring of 2004, design work had begun on the new Student Services Center. During that meeting, some analysis of the campus outdoors, opportunities for campus outdoor enrichment, and improved way-finding were discussed. Inspired by the flow of information and ideas for improving their campus, the ASSC embarked on a way to bring a multitude of ideas and campus vision together in an organized, creative forum—a campus consensus building workshop. Their desire was to improve way-finding; create places with interest and shade for socializing, reading, studying, contemplation, and reflection; use landscape to unify the campus and provide definition of spaces; improve circulation; and improve overall campus identity, beauty, maintenance and sustainability. This document tells the story of how 20 students, faculty, and campus leaders gathered together to dream about what could be and develop ideas about campus outdoor enrichment possibilities. The following is a summary of activities at Solano Community College on November 16, 2006—truly an inspiring “Day on Campus.”

CAMPUS SURVEY

Campus PathPrior to the “Day on Campus,” the ASSC organized a campus survey. This two-part survey asked questions about issues and opportunities for improving the campus outdoors. The following is a summary of the questions asked and responses given. This information was presented at the Consensus Building Workshop on November 16th. It was helpful in that it gave the workshoppers valuable insight into what a cross section of campus users thought were important issues and opportunities to consider.
