Traditional Redistricting Principles
Traditional redistricting principles were followed throughout the development of the Board's preferred option, these principles include:
- Comply with the Federal Voting Rights Act and the California Voting Rights Act
- Creating relatively equal size trustee areas - people, not citizens
- Contiguous - areas should be whole and connected, no gaps should exist
- Maintain "communities of interest" - this includes Latinos, Asians, African Americans, other ethnic groups, neighborhoods, and other communities
- Follow city, county, local government, school board lines
- Keep districts compact - in both appearance and function
- Preserving voter choices
