Challenges and Opportunities
In addition to the multiple roles and responsibilities of any excellent community college president, the new Solano Community College Superintendent/President must be able to:- Focus the institution’s energy and efforts on ensuring student success and improving completion through support of innovative and excellent educational programs and services.
- Recognize, value, and promote the contribution of all components of the comprehensive community college.
- Grow the college’s enrollment through a variety of strategies such as enhancement of the college’s public image and reputation, outreach to new populations, flexible scheduling, user-friendly procedures, and pro-active retention activities.
- Support a campus climate that values inclusiveness and diversity and recruits and welcomes students and employees that reflect the demographics of our communities.
- Oversee the successful planning and implementation of Measure Q bond funds so that the end result is an improvement of learning opportunities for our students.
- Guide the college through the new endeavor of developing and offering its first Baccalaureate degree.
- Lead the college in the development of a new comprehensive Strategic Plan that reflects the college’s values, the communities’ needs and the expansion of the Vacaville and Vallejo Centers.
- Address and provide for campus needs related to technology, sustainability, physical plant improvements, and the creation of student-friendly common areas.
- Engage the college community in the preparation of an exemplary Self-Evaluation document in preparation for the Accrediting Commission team visit in 2017.
- Achieve fiscal stability through superb skills in fiscal management, the acquisition of external resources, and advocacy at the local and state levels.
- Create and sustain a cohesive leadership team that is highly effective and accountable and that will support the agreed upon vision for the college.
- Support, encourage, and model a college campus culture of civility, respect, and trust where students and college constituent groups collaborate respectfully.
- Continue and expand the college’s connections to the community, its partnerships with education, governmental agencies, and business and industry in support of educational opportunities for students and economic development for our communities.
- Develop an excellent working relationship with the Board of Trustees and support their commitment to effective trusteeship.

- Have accreditation experience
- Possess superb fiscal management knowledge and skills
- Be technologically literate and understand technology’s role in the college
- Build and hold accountable a highly effective leadership team
- Practice participatory governance, collaboration and collegiality and be able to make difficult decisions
- Respect, appreciate and engage with constituents at all levels
- Relate well and interact regularly with students and student leaders
- Be sensitive to, comfortable with, and visible in all the communities served by Solano College
- Expand partnerships with business and industry, P-16, and other public agencies
- Be entrepreneurial and successful at acquiring outside resources and advocating for the college at the local, state and national levels
- Be visible, approachable and accessible on campus and in the community, while also finding balance between their external and internal roles
- Operate ethically with integrity, honesty, and transparency and expect the same of others
- Be an excellent communicator and listener
- Be caring, compassionate and empathetic
- Model and encourage an optimistic and inspirational attitude for Solano College’s future
- Establish a trusting, respectful working relationship with all members of the Governing Board
- Possess energy and stamina and know how to find enough balance in life in order to take good care of himself/herself
Required Qualifications
- A Master’s Degree is required. An earned doctorate from an accredited Institution is preferred
- Significant senior administrative experience in higher education is required
- Demonstrated understanding of the teaching and learning process
- Demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to the diverse socio-economic, cultural and ethnic background of all employees
