Traditional Redistricting Principles

Traditional redistricting principles were followed throughout the development of the Board's preferred option, these principles include:

• Comply with the Federal Voting Rights Act and the California Voting Rights Act
• Creating relatively equal size trustee areas - people, not citizens
• Contiguous - areas should be whole and connected, no gaps should exist
• Maintain "communities of interest" - this includes Latinos, Asians, African Americans, other ethnic groups, neighborhoods, and other communities
• Follow city, county, local government, school board lines
• Keep districts compact - in both appearance and function
• Preserving voter choices
