Welcome to Solano Biotech
Imagine that you or a family member find yourselves diagnosed with a disease you’ve never heard of. It’s scary, but your doctor reassures you that there’s a new treatment that just became available.
Or maybe you’re watching late-night TV and come across a crime show that features DNA testing as a way to catch and convict an elusive murderer.
Maybe you’ve been a passenger or driver of a car running on biofuels instead of gasoline. Or you’re munching on a fruit, grain or vegetable that is being grown in new ways that make it more plentiful and affordable.
What do these very different aspects of life, ranging from health and crime to agriculture and transportation, have in common? They’re all connected to biotechnology ⎯ or “biotech” for short. You may not have heard a lot about biotechnology, but it is already part of your daily life in many different ways.
What is biotech?
Biotech is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products that are useful to humans and to our entire planet.
This marriage of biology and technology has launched a relatively new field, but it’s growing fast. In fact, it’s the wave of the future in medicine and health care, as well as other sectors such as agriculture, industry, and the environment. For example, biotech tools and products have helped detect and treat diseases, increase crop yields, and produce biofuels that can help reduce greenhouse gases.
Biotech started in the Bay Area and the region is still home to the largest number of biotech companies in the world. These companies are eager to recruit and hire talented, trained employees into careers with long-term potential for growth and great salaries, starting right now.
At Solano Community College, we are ready to link students, graduates of other programs, and biotech workers to the skills and connections that will help them succeed in this exciting, fast-growing field.
